There is a vast amount of information at the Texas Historical Society about the history of Polk County, how it was started and developed, etc.. I found it fascinating that this was once tribal land. ” Before European settlement, Polk County was inhabited by the Hasinai Indians, a loose alliance of Caddo descent. The Alabama and Coushatta Indians crossed into the Big Thicket, which covered much of the region, from Louisiana in the late eighteenth century.
