Holiday Lake Estates Petition For Mitigation Funding

Please Participate In Helping Your HLE Community & Neighbors

Holiday Lake Estate (HLE), ESN 403, residents are requesting help, on behalf of ourselves, our HLEVFD, and those subdivisions that may be affected by changes to our waterways (Holiday Woods, Karen's Resort, Viewpoint, & The Preserves) to rebuild/improve our lake drainage systems - dam, spillway, drainage culverts, levees, bridge, and pathway back into the Trinity River. Several of our residents have flooded repeatedly in the last year, and during Harvey, 63 homes were damaged, some are irreparable. In the days and months following Hurricane Harvey, land that was under 4 to 8 feet of water was destabilized. The added weight and strong water current created damage to our infrastructures. Quote from the 2012 Polk County Multi-Jurisdictional Plan report discussing HLE - "The areas where these homes are located have suffered from extensive soil erosion increasing the probability of escalated flooding in the future." That erosion created critical damage to our residences and drainage during Harvey.

Below are the signatures of the property owners of Holiday Lake Estates imploring those in authority to help us. We need a complete evaluation of our infrastructure. repair of critical damage, and improvements that will help us avoid this level of flooding in the future. Our Volunteer Fire Department (ESN 403) also requires aid with their evacuation equipment. Flooding has caused us to lose too many of our neighbors, left us with abandoned homes, and destroyed the lives of our HLE friends.

As a new resident, this is a hazard and safety issue for all, not to mention the concerns and damage it can cause our community and the surrounding lakes. When you think about it even the Endangered Wildlife in the area as this can flood the rear property of my home. I have Eagles nesting in my backyard and trees adjoining the property. These water quality control and water issues with drainage needs to be addressed, properly and promptly.
    Respectfully,
    Irene Menchaca

Please take into consideration that the improvements will have a greater impact than the cost, at hand. Yet, something the town could use to promote more building for growth, as a gem community.
